Punjab CM tries to woo corporate bigwigs in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jan 23 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann rolled out a red carpet of welcome to top Indian industry leaders on Monday, inviting them to invest in his state to boost industrial growth and open the doors of prosperity for the youth.

The Chief Minister had parleyed in detail with Godrej, Hindustan Unilever (NS:), Mafatlal Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, Jindal Steels and others during their visit here.

He portrayed the state as the preferred destination for these industrial units and asked them to invest.

Mann also informed them that the state government is making great efforts to further strengthen the single window system to facilitate investors.

He said the state government’s pragmatic policies, along with industrial peace and state-of-the-art infrastructure, provide a conducive atmosphere for industrial development in the state.

Mann claimed that the previous one-stop service was simply a sham, serving no meaningful purpose, not only demoralizing potential investors, but also hampering the state’s industrial development.

During a meeting with representatives of Hindustan Unilever (LON:), the Chief Minister asked them to expand their existing plant for manufacturing tomato ketchup in Nabha.

He said the government will encourage farmers in the state to plant tomatoes in Punjab, thereby improving their economic situation. The company has assured Mann that they will explore the feasibility of establishing their unit in the state.

The Chief Minister also had a detailed meeting with a delegation from Thyrocare (NS:), an Indian multinational chain of diagnostic and preventive care laboratories.

During the meeting, he informed the company representatives that the government is making a big push to provide quality health services to the people. Mann also invited the company to set up a chain of laboratories in the state for the benefit of the people.

During a meeting with the Mafatlal group, the Chief Minister said that the state belt produces the finest cotton in the world which can be used as a raw material to produce premium quality cloth. He asked the company to invest in the state as there is huge growth potential in Punjab.

Participating in a meeting with representatives of Mahindra & Mahindra, he said that there is great potential for the tourism sector in the state, especially around Ranjit Sagar Dam, Chohal Dam and others.

The company showed great interest in establishing its Club Mahindra chain of resorts in the state. The Chief Minister was also invited to the inauguration of the upgraded Swaraj Tractors plant at Lalru.

During a meeting with the delegation of Kotak Mahindra (NS:) bank, the Chief Minister discussed the possibilities of expansion of the banking sector in the state.

He assured the delegation that the state government will give them all its support and cooperation to start their venture.

Meanwhile, during a meeting with a delegation from Hind Terminal, a logistics company, the Chief Minister said that there is great scope for growth of the sector in the state. He assured full support to the company for the expansion of its unit in Quilla Raipur.

Mann said that the state government will promote the logistics park.

The Chief Minister also had detailed discussions with Godrej group officials, who visited him later that day. Mann asked the group to invest in the agricultural sector to benefit the farmers immensely. He also asked them to explore the possibility of expansion in the real sector as well.

During a meeting with Jindal Steel, the Chief Minister said the state is heading towards a surplus in power production and this can help accelerate the growth of the industry.

The Chief Minister said that the Invest Punjab Summit being organized in Mohali on 23-24 February will prove to be a milestone in giving a huge boost to the industrial growth of the state.
