‘Give me all the cash’: Why a Delhi policeman was suspended for fining a Korean vlogger Rs 5,000

A viral video showing a Delhi traffic policeman issuing a Rs 5,000 ticket to a Korean vlogger has gone viral and the policeman has since faced a temporary suspension. The incident took place after Korean vlogger, FIVELY, was pulled over for crossing the yellow line and driving on the wrong side in Delhi. The policeman approached the car and informed the vlogger of his traffic violation before telling him, “Court fine, Rs 5,000, in cash.” FIFTY he proceeded to take out the cash and offered 500 rupees, to which the Delhi policeman showed him online that the amount was 5,000 rupees and not 500 rupees. So far, things seemed to be going by the book, before they didn’t anymore.

In this YouTube vlog posted by FIVELLY, the incident takes place between 8:52 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. Look here:

From the vlogger’s reaction, it seems that he doesn’t have enough cash to meet the cash challenge. The policeman seems to notice this and takes all the money the vlogger had in hand. The policeman then hands him what is presumably FIVELY’s driver’s license, but does not provide him with a challan receipt. Furthermore, for what can be assumed to be “humanitarian reasons”, the policeman returns a 500 rupee note to the Korean vlogger, since he had taken the rest of the money that FIVELY had. The YouTube video has since gone viral, sparking outrage among netizens.

The Delhi policeman was later identified as Mahesh Chand of the Delhi Traffic Police. The viral video posted by the Korean vlogger is titled “Give Me All The Cash” Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Drive A Car In India. This has further angered some netizens who blame the policeman’s behavior for being a national embarrassment. Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police posted a statement on Twitter that read: “Upon becoming aware of the social media post, the officer in question seen in the video has been suspended pending investigation. The Delhi Police have a zero tolerance policy towards corruption.”
