RAIPUR: In a strong show of protest, youths belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities held a stripe near Vidhan Sabha on the first day of the monsoon session of the assembly on Tuesday to protest against jobs reserved for SC/ST being usurped by ineligible people using a fake caste certificate.
Approximately 20 youths, carrying banners, ran naked towards the state assembly building, chanting anti-government slogans. Police officers were seen chasing them to prevent them from going any further. The protesters were subsequently detained by the police.
Vinay Kaushal, the spokesman for the Sangharsh Samite SC/ST category fake caste certificate case, stated that the nude demonstration in front of the Chhattisgarh legislature demanded immediate action against people who possessed fake caste certificates. Although Kaushal claimed that around 100 young people from across the state were participating in the protest, only nearly two dozen showed up for the agitation.
Kaushal highlighted that various government departments have reported cases of people who do not belong to the reserved categories exploiting the quotas earmarked for SC and ST in both government and political positions since the formation of the state. In response to the seriousness of this matter, the state government formed a high-level caste verification committee.
The committee’s investigation uncovered 267 cases of fraudulent caste certificates out of 758 cases examined, covering the period from 2000 to 2020. Consequently, the government issued orders to immediately remove officials and employees possessing false certificates from crucial positions. .
Kaushal expressed disappointment at the inadequate implementation of these orders, as some people withdrew while others challenged the committee’s report in court. Furthermore, he claimed that many fake certificate holders managed to get promotions and hold important positions despite government directive.
The lack of action and response from the authorities has left the youth of SC and ST deeply dissatisfied. Their demands include strict measures against those found guilty of possessing false caste certificates and the withdrawal of government protection granted to the accused.
